BETHANY HUNTON
.jpg)
Bethany Hunton is an artist born and based in the North East of England exploring relationships between materials and site, as well as the theory of ‘Materiality’. Typically known for her sculptural and photographic installations. Testing the properties of locally sourced materials traditional and unconventional and developing relationships and languages with them informs her practice. Hunton's childhood was wildly dominated by industry due to her family’s connections with the Steel Works and Shipyards. Artistically she is always brought back to those innate connections. By creating installation's that are situated in surrounding areas of significance to the artist, she experiments with associated/poetic connotations of her local area’s heritage and what they mean to her as an artist. Researching into and reliving the journeys and absence of said materials, allows her practice to be ever changing in regards to a contemporary context.
Allowing the viewer to focus on the material is extremely important to Hunton, therefore she will never mask or conceal the nature of the material. Historically, colour adds meaning and impact to artworks – sometimes without the artist themselves knowing. To create new and radical forms, she employ diverse methods, often working in a space and allowing the piece to take on qualities of the surroundings. Hunton's main aim as an artist is to affect the viewers perspective of the piece and the space in which the art has been situated
